After a major increase in petroleum prices, the government has decided to provide subsidies on petrol for the extremely poor segment of society. Under this initiative, individuals registered in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), as well as motorcycle and rickshaw drivers, will be given access to cheaper fuel.According to a report by Zaheer Ali Khan, the government has finalized a plan to support those living below the poverty line. The subsidy will be funded through Rs. 23 billion saved under the government’s energy conservation measures.

During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum, officials from the Ministry of Petroleum revealed that more than 30 million people in the country rely on motorcycles and rickshaws. A subsidy plan is being developed specifically for them.

Committee Chairman Manzoor Kakar criticized the recent increase in petroleum prices, calling it a heavy burden on the public. He stated that such a sudden hike should not have happened, especially when the country had reserves for 28 days. He questioned the urgency behind the increase of Rs. 50, highlighting that the public is already struggling with poverty.

Officials also explained that disruptions in petroleum supply due to tensions in the Middle East affected availability. As a result, Pakistan allowed the import of diesel with lower European standards.

Currently, crude oil reserves are sufficient for 11 days, diesel for 21 days, and petrol for 27 days, while LNG stock is only available until April 14.
